While we will be hosting a big crowd of boarders on the Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 30th, we will be taking daycare dogs by appointment only.

Fun With PupPod at Scampers!

When you drop your pup off at Scampers, you know he’ll get lots of physical exercise running and playing with his buddies. But we make sure he gets plenty of mental exercise, too!

That’s because dogs are smart, and they need mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Learning new things can help keep their brains healthy, build their confidence, and prevent problems like barking, chewing and digging.

Did you know....

Many of you may have noticed breed-specific or class-specific tendencies in your own pets – boxers have boundless energy, terriers are tenacious, Labradors are loyal and loving, and shepherds like to herd their toys (or their people) together to keep a watchful eye on their charges. What you may not have noticed is that these behaviors are closely linked to height, weight, and head size and shape.

If any of you are horse lovers, this may not come as a surprise to you. Dr. Temple Grandin has been discussing the connection between physical and psychological traits in livestock for decades. It wasn’t until February of this year that the canine world had a similarly robust data set from which to draw conclusions. The statistical analysis is rigorous, and detailed, but Dr. Stanley Coren wrote an excellent summary here. He states that brachycephalic dogs are more likely to play with a human and a toy than dolicephalic dogs. Dolicephalic dogs are more likely to have a calm response to a new or confusing situation than a bracycephalic dog. Shorter dogs tend to be more aggressive, whereas taller dogs tend to be more cooperative with their humans. And heavier dogs tend to be calmer than lighter dogs.

For more information on conformation, bone structure, and coloring as an indicator of personality traits, I suggest Dr. Temple Grandin’s Animals Make Us Human, specifically the chapter on dogs.

Pooch need a spruce up?

Chris Sugarbaker of Cut-N-Run, mobile groomer extraordinaire will make his next bi-weekly visit to Scampers on Tuesday, June 7th. His schedule fills up quickly, though, so make sure to get your reservations in early. If our current schedule does fill up, we recommend setting up a reservation for Chris' next visit, then, on June 21st.

If you've created your GingrApp identity, you can set up your reservations now on GingrApp. When you make your daycare reservation, you'll notice the option to select "Additional Services". Choose the service you'd like to add, then confirm by clicking the blue bar on the right, then choose the date (again), and choose from one of the times available.

Hey all -- look for our coffee service each morning when you are dropping off. We're donating the coffee and trimmings to the cause. Any funds we take in for cups of coffee will be forwarded to Homeward Pet.

Friday Funny

Every once in a while we come across a dog-oriented joke.

Heard 'round the water bowl

We're a pretty close knit group of pooches - we form strong friendships, and we get to know each other very well. When new pooches join us, we love to introduce them around and get them started in their Scampering adventures - that's why they call us the "Welcome Waggin".

The Big Dogs sure enjoyed welcoming Jack Golden to the group - a great friend to all, a generally affable fellow, a true Golden.

Roscoe the Mini Aussie decided he liked Scampers enough on Tuesday to come back for an extended stay. He's having a grand time with all his new friends.

Shy girl, Pepper, a little terrier mix, was fascinated by all the goings on with her new friends in the Littles on Wednesday. She even joined in the roving and sniffing activities.

The Littles had a busy Thursday, introducing young Golden Sadie, along with mini doodles Charlie and Wilson to the fun. Sadie had a great time with new besties Cali Wheaton and Sully, while Cosmo and Marlo made Charlie and Wilson feel comfortable.

Today, it's little Frenchie Pup, Khloe, who's charming all the Wranglers. She's a little bemused yet, but had a great time wrasslin' with Lil Abner.

We wish Millie Sheepdog farewell and good luck as she makes her way towards Florida. We're going to miss you, sweetie!

And best wishes also to old friend Chocolate Harley - oh, dear, we hope we'll be seeing you once in a while. The commute simply takes his people in a different direction now.

Canine Nosework Classes at Scampers

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and an inborn desire to hunt. The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop the natural scenting abilities of your dog by using their passion for hunting and their love of toys, food and exercise.

It's a great class for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy and you get to find out just how good your dog's nose is.
